VACUUM OF SILENT PANIC

35 x 50 cm, aluminum, rubber, nail
€ 700

Natalia Stachon’s new sculptural works use simple urban elements such as street signs, yet the elements have been transformed, abstracted and reinterpreted. On the one hand, directly by resorting to William S. Burroughs’ verse, such as in how the aluminum signs contain quotes from his cut-up poems in 1962. On the other hand, the objects’ materiality or hanging make them seem oddly threatening, like fragments from the Burroughsian “Interzone”. Street signs usually serve our orientation, but here they are turned into their opposite and made useless. The imprinted text is only readable on a second glance since it seems like it’s been vacuumed under a layer of black rubber.
